World Environment Day Comes to San Francisco

The United Nations Environment Programme selected San Francisco to be the global host for World Environment Day 2005, the first time in the event's 35-year history that the big show will be in the United States.

This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations, which was founded in San Francisco in 1945.

Green Cities

WED 2005 will bring together the mayors of the world's most populous 100 cities to establish universal benchmarks of urban environmental progress, and identify tools to achieve these targets. These Urban Environmental Accords will be the roadmap to a livable urban future, and may be the greatest legacy of San Francisco's turn as a host.

We are also at a point when the majority of the world's population now resides in urban areas, consuming 75% of the planet's natural resources. As urban populations grow, it's essential that we balance the environment, economy and social equity in order to support our future generations.

5 Days - 5 Themes - 5,000 Great Ideas

Each of the five days has a different theme. Mayors will attend seminars and events focusing on each environmental area, and local organizations are hosting hundreds of related events and exhibitions for the entire community.

June 1: Pure Elements
Food, Water, Air

June 2: Redesigning the Metropolis
Recycling, Green Building, Smart Growth

June 3: Cities on the Move
Transportation

June 4: Urban Power
Energy, Renewables, Energy Conservation

June 5: Flower Power
Open Space, Biodiversity, Greening the Urban Environment

Sustainable Cuisine Program

Clearly the program dear to our heart, Om Organics is honored to collaborate with the World Environment Day committee, OpenTable.com, and the Coca-Cola Company to host the Sustainable Cuisine Program throughout the WED week.

June 1st-5th -- Organic Dining in the City
Close to 100 restaurants in and around San Francisco support the program, and will be showcasing dishes made with 100% organically/sustainably-grown ingredients throughout the WED week. We aim to:

  • raise awareness about the environmental impact of how food is produced,
  • demonstrate the quality and economic benefits of a locally-sourced food supply, and
  • promote local growers and chefs who are helping make change!

Join us in celebrating our conscientious community of producers, preparers and consumers -- who share the mission of environmental preservation and improved public health.
