This Thanksgiving, stay away from the scary Large White turkeys sold in 90% of our stores.
They're bred for massive breasts where they end up so out of proportion they lose their natural
ability to fly, run or mate. On large farms, they're routinely administered antibiotics as
well, which has caused concern
among medical scientists and consumers alike.
And, if that isn't enough, Large White turkeys lack flavor. They are indeed freaks of nature!
This holiday season, thousands of Americans will forgo their normal Large White to enjoy a
different kind of bird. "Heritage" turkeys (called "Standard turkeys" in the industry) are
enjoying a culinary comeback.
Thanks to the joint efforts of breed conservationists, farmers and Slow Food, demand for heritage turkeys
surged in 2003. A new niche in a corporate controlled market, heritage turkeys are helping bring
natural turkeys and profits back to the farm, and health to the consumer.
