Sustaining NextCourse

Some of San Francisco's top sustainably minded chefs are throwing their skills behind a benefit for NextCourse, a nonprofit that works to bring better foods to nutritionally deprived neighborhoods and to promote the use of healthy, local foods. Judy Rodgers of Zuni Cafe, Annie Sommerville of Greens and Thom Fox of Acme Chophouse will cook for the benefit. NextCourse has won the lease on the historic 1877 building, which will continue as an events venue while programs are developed to show the National Park System how to work local, sustainable foods into daily food service. Terra Madre Melting Pot Dinner, III

This will be a dinner with the presence of several farmer friends who just got back from the Terra Madre conference in Italy, and they will tell us all about it. In honor of Terra Madre, we will do a "melting pot" dinner, with the three main courses representing the countries that brought the three biggest delegations to the conference: Italy, USA and Brazil. Appetizers will feature a bit of Africa and Asia. (Julia from Mariquita is making the carrot cake for dessert! This is a Slow Food Carmel dinner that's a benefit for a tiny local farm called Everett Family Farm. Email Gaby at cgforte@pacbell.net for more info.

Allstar Organics at LaFranchi Ranch: Cover Crops, Compost & Spring Planting

The Lafranchi Ranch was one of the first to diversify from traditonal livestock agriculture to organic row crops. Randy Lafranchi converted 10 acres of pasture to crops in 1996. Today the land is leased to Allstar Organics, owned by Marty Jacobson and Janet Brown. They grow a selection of crops, including: pumpkins; melons; peppers; strawberries; and prize-winning heirloom tomatoes. Marty and Janet will explain cover cropping and tell us what organic amendments and compost are going into the fields to build productivity. Those who wish to can stay and help plant tomatoes. Pre-registration required.

Savor California tasting and benefit for Slow Food USA

In support of Slow Food USA, an array of specialty food and beverage producers from Savor California will offer specialty food, wine and beer in a farmers' market setting within the world renowned Culinary Institute of America in St Helena.
